Yonsei Application(s)

Part 2

With MIX, the secondary application process (the application sent directly to you by the university you're applying to) is done completely on your own. Please refer to this page to see what documents were required for this year's round of fall applications. I have also incorporated a timeline from when Yonsei first sent me the application to when I received my acceptance email. Please also use this page to see my experiences and timelines with applying for housing and courses during course registration.

Required Documents

1) Official E-transcript

  • You will need to order one here

  • You cannot submit an unofficial transcript

  • It is about $9 and will be sent to you within 5 minutes after purchasing

2) ID Photo

  • Your photo needs to be 4.5cm x 3.5 cm

  • There are specific requirements for the photo like making sure your ears show, so make sure to follow them

3) Passport Copy

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the semester starts

  • It will not be accepted if it expires within 2 months after you're supposed to return home

4) Proof of funding

  • A bank statement must be provided showing that you have money saved

  • It must be under the student's name. If not, an additional document i.e. birth certificate must also be provided to prove your relationship with the person whose name is on the statement

  • The balance must be at least $4,000 for one semester exchange and $10,000 for one academic year (two semesters exchange)

5) Health Insurance

  • This document can be submitted later on (you can submit your application without it in case you do not have it ready)

  • The deadline was July 15 for fall admission

  • Insurance must be able to cover any international costs

  • You may use your personal health insurance if it covers you overseas, but I recommend waiting for MIX to provide you with an insurance letter (processed through UH Mānoa) to submit

  • If you have any issues or complications, you can email Yonsei in advance and they will allow you to submit the document past the deadline

6) Study Plan

  • Yonsei required us to fill out a word document with four prompts asking us about our purpose studying at Yonsei, our major, our educational background, and a self-introduction

Yonsei Housing Application

Yonsei offers two housing options for international students:

1) International House (Gukje Haksa)

2) SK Global House

I chose SK Global because I have had experience living in dorms with communal bathrooms and did not want to do that again even if everyone was saying that they're kept clean. That's not to say there is anything wrong with communal bathrooms but it is a matter of personal preference. What SK Global had to offer sat more comfortably with me than International house. I was not sure if I wanted a roommate or not when I was deciding which building I wanted to live in and International house does not offer single rooms, so SK Global automatically suited my condition more.

*IMPORTANT TO NOTE*

The housing process is different for everyone. It worked out well for my friend and I because we prepared well ahead of time. However, the process may not go as smoothly. I have talked to other international students I have met at Yonsei who were placed in completely different buildings (still on campus) than what was available on the website.

Housing Application open

1) Application process

  • The selection process is done on a first-come, first-served basis

  • 2024 Fall Housing application notice

  • You're going to apply through your Yonsei student portal

    • You will receive further details via email but know that this is not the same portal you used to submit your application documents to Yonsei when completing the secondary application

  • My friend and I applied right when the application opened up and were able to secure our preferred accommodations

2) Housing Payment

  • Housing is paid for once you receive confirmation that you were accepted into a residence building

  • There are a few payment options including:

    • Wise

    • Flywire

    • Wire transfer

      • I chose to make my payment through Wise because my friend tried that method and it was done within 5 minutes

      • Yonsei will provide individual instructions for each method, but Wise and wire transfer are faster than Flywire

  • You can check if your payment was received in your portal under 'Confirmation of Payment'

3) Roommate Request

  • I had a friend who I wanted to request as a roommate so we went through the request process together

  • Once the request window opens you just have to make sure you and your roommate put in and accept the request before the deadline

    • It is not based on a first-come-first-served basis

  • We had to input each other's ID's (SAY*******) into the site and then only one of us had to "accept" the request, officiating our rooming situation

4) Required Housing Check-in Documents

  • You will be required to bring in 2 medical documents when you check into SK Global House

    1. Tuberculosis Test Result

    2. MMR (measles) Immunization Record

  • Yonsei will provide you with more specific details (i.e. the validity dates of the tests/documents)

Yonsei Course Registration

Course Registration at Yonsei is very different from course registration at UH Mānoa (and no, it is not better).

Mileage Bidding process

  • TIPS BEFORE Registration:

    • Use this site to see the course equivalencies between your university and Shidler to receive credit for your business classes (for Shidler students)

    • Use this site to check the course equivalencies between Yonsei and the business courses at Shidler (for Shidler students)

      • Make sure to do this ahead of time to save yourself from unnecessary stress (I speak from experience)

Round 1

  • Yonsei's Guide to Course Registration

  • Yonsei's Video Guide to Course Registration

    • I highly encourage you to read thoroughly through the Course Registration portion of the PDF guide that Yonsei provides and watch all of the videos at least twice as it is a meticulous process

  • Once the announcement is released, you will be able to view which courses you're enrolled in and which ones you were waitlisted for (if any)

  • Although I got the schedule I wanted later on, my registration experience would have been more successful the first time around if I had registered for more courses (meaning I would have had to bid less miles for other courses I wanted)

    • However, it may be different for everyone

    • I also only registered for the four classes I wanted (which is risky)

    • To leverage my original plans, I should have registered for more classes to:

      1. Have backups in case I did not receive the courses I wanted

      2. Have a higher chance of getting into the courses I wanted

        • I thought if I devoted all my miles to the courses I wanted I would have a higher chance of getting those classes but it's actually that applying for more courses will give you a higher chance (the latter is the better bet)

  • I got into 3/4 of the courses I registered for right away once the announcement was released

  • I was able to eventually get off the waitlist for my last course before round 2 because I was close to the top of the waitlist (7th), but this may not be the case for everyone

    • My friend was 15th and could not get in until after round 2 (check out her blog to learn more about her experience)

Round 2

  • You can participate in round 2 if you did not get the classes you wanted after round 1, but otherwise you do not need to

  • Round 2 requires you to join a new waitlist and is based on a first-come-first-serve basis unlike the first round which is based on mileage bidding

  • There is no announcement of whether you got into your classes or not so you will need to continue checking on your portal until the end of round 2

Add and Drop Period

  • The add and drop period takes place after round 2 and is also on a first-come-first-serve basis

  • You will have to join a new waitlist (separate from round 2) if you want to try enrolling in classes again.

  • This is basically like a third round of registration

  • This is the last chance you have to enroll in a class

  • If you were not able to enroll in the courses you wanted or you have low confidence in your waitlist number, you may submit the Course Registration Approval Form that Yonsei provides AFTER you take yourself off the waitlist (you cannot do both), BUT getting into the course is not guaranteed

Withdrawal Period

  • You can withdrawal from any class you want during this time but wether a "W" appears on your transcript is up to your institution, so make sure to contact your advisor about this
